First launch needs one extra step. This build is not yet notarized by Apple, so macOS blocks the first launch. The install steps below show the two clicks that allow it. Only download it from this page.

Install

Four steps, then open a folder.

  1. Open the disk image and drag the app into Applications

If you are replacing an older copy, quit it first. Your accounts, projects and drafts live in a separate data folder and are kept.

  2. Allow the first launch

Double-click the app. When macOS says it cannot verify the developer, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the message about ResearchTogether and choose Open Anyway. Then open the app again and confirm. This happens once.

  3. Create a local account and open or create a project folder

The account is private to this Mac. A project is an ordinary folder; the app initializes Git for new projects.

  4. Connect a model when you want AI

Writing, reading and annotating work without one. For conversations, add an OpenAI API key in Settings, or sign in with Claude or Codex from Settings. Codex also needs the Codex CLI installed separately.

Other computers

Apple Silicon today.

  • Intel Macs are not supported yet. A separate build is planned; the current installer will not open on Intel.
  • Windows and Linux are not planned for this release. The app relies on macOS sandboxing for command execution.
  • Updates are manual for now. Come back to this page for new versions; replacing the app keeps your data.
